B-Ball - Sports Photography by Jan

Who knew that basketball was this popular in Ireland? Turns out Douglas has two teams. I didn’t even know. I mean, I’ve seen the basketball courts in the Ballincollig Regional Park and this one in Douglas. But I just always assumed they were those ill fated decisions the council always seem to make, similar to the skate parks that always seem absolutely unskateable for beginners and children. The exact reason they were built in the first place.

I guess if you build the facilities, people will come and use them. Especially post lockdown. I feel like I am seeing way more people use those outdoor workout machines as well. Maybe I just notice it more these days as I’m actively looking out for it. Though Ireland seems a little more active these days.

This basketball court is a great facility though! Although a disgruntled player did say that the hoops aren’t regulation height. Much to my friend’s dismay, who felt he was just two inches too short to do a proper Michael Jordan dunk. Well Billy, unfortunately you’ll have to grow more than two inches now!

This was a shoot just for fun, not a paid, professional shoot, yet I was still taking it somewhat seriously enough. I knew exactly how I wanted these photos to look and honestly, they came out even better than expected.

I wanted to use my flash in this bright sunlight. Create a more film like look, as if it was photographed with a simple point and shoot camera. This means, vibrant, strong colours, high contrast, and no shallow depth of field (ie. no background blur). Everything had to be in focus, and I wanted that harsh flash look. This was really pushing my flash (the Yongnuo 560IV – review here) to the limit. Although it is one of the more powerful flashes on the market, in this Irish summer sun, it was struggling to be as bright as I wanted it to be. I wanted it so bright that the background drowned into shadows.

With the flash set to 1/1, ie. max power, I had to be conservative with the amount of shots I took. Reload time for the flash is around 3 seconds I think. I can’t wait for my Godox V1 to arrive! It recycles in just 1.5 seconds. Though three times more expensive than Yongnuo, I probably would take the Yongnuo again next time for a non-paid shoot. Especially since, in a moment of distraction, the basketball made full contact with my camera, lens and flash all at once. Everything seems to have been fine, but the flash does sit looser on the camera now. I’m going to look into the possibility of replacing the hotshoe mount on it. No biggie though. I’d rather break my gear while getting great photos (or trying to get great photos), than leave it at home in pristine condition.

Foul!

This day was a funny mix between some sports photography and street photography. With it just being a friendly game of mostly banter, I was able to enter the court myself and stand right next to the players. Something that would obviously be impossible in a professional setting. In that case I would have to take my 50-140mm telephoto lens, stand on the sides and be happy with the positioning I was given. Use a flash, and in a flash you’re outta the arena. Instead, I used my Samyang 12mm f2 lens, much in the same way as in the party photography style I did here (Samyang 12mm review and photos here). Set the aperture to f8, set focus to about 2m (this will cover everything from 0.5m to infinity to be in focus), blast the flash and just kinda guess what you’re photographing. For not a single one of the action shots did I look through the viewfinder or at the screen. That’s the beautiful thing about this 12mm. And with the manual focus, the shutter is instant. You can leave it right to the last millisecond to fire it off. It’s fantastic!

I did try my Fujifilm 23mm f2 as well, but I just found the 12mm to work better for this situation and I thought I’d rather not risk my 16-55mm f2.8. If it was a more important shoot, than yeah, of course! But for this, the 12mm was perfect.

I didn’t know most of the guys there that day. So having a bit of a street photographer’s energy was important. Be open, inviting, unintimidating. And enjoy the sun yourself! We have so little of it here in Cork city.

It always surprises me how easy it is to meet strangers through photographing. Even in today’s world, when the novelty of being photographed has worn off somewhat and people tend to be a bit wary about cameras, if done right, it can open up situations that wouldn’t be obtainable in any other way.

There’s no real point to this post and there doesn’t always have to be one. It was just a fun day and I just wanted to share that fun and excitement. And maybe this is my way to encourage others to try something completely new or a bit different.

I have never really had any contact with basketball before in my life and didn’t expect to have that connection in Ireland of all places. This whole day reminded me a lot of my MMA photographing days. You can check those photos out here, they’re actually class! Or don’t. You can just leave your device now and just do that new thing you always wanted to. Or don’t listen to me at all. I wouldn’t even know the difference!

Till the next post, see you then!

Oh and if you need a professional photographer in the Cork city area, give me a shout! I’d be happy to not destroying more of my gear in basketball related incidents!

70 Years Young - Family Photography by Jan

Location: Castlemartyr Resort. Occasion: 70th Birthday. Nations: Three and a Kingdom.

“How have I never been to the Castlemartyr resort?” I ask myself. Well, I am on of those idiots who always just drives through Castlemartyr impatienlty to finally get to Garryvoe beach or Ballycotton. The latter either for the cliff walk, or to go to one of the best fish ‘n chips shops; Skinnys.

Well, I am one of those people who also decides they need to go for a swim at Garryvoe beach after their shoot at the Castlemartyr Resort as well. I guess, I just can’t be in this corner of the world and not go to the beach or the lighthouse!

I love photographing these family reunions, especially after all the lockdowns. Often, it is at these special family occasions that I am busy photographing at, that families are meeting again for the first time. This family was split across three nations and a kingdom; obviously Ireland (originating from Dublin), then America and Belgium, as well as the kingdom of Kerry. For the first time in years, this family could be complete, hailing from these four corners of the world.

They were all just happy to be together and enjoy each other’s company, while getting some high quality family portrait photos by a professional photographer; me. I must admit, this was one of the most relaxed shoots I have ever had. I can’t remember photographing a family that was so immensely relaxed and so genuinely happy to just being together. Although, the good weather probably helped a lot too! But it was beautiful to see such genuine behaviour.

After the group photos were taken, I was asked to just get some photos of the kids playing and running around. When suddenly this happened:

All by themselves, the kids collectively decided they wanted their own group photo. Without talking much about it, they all gathered together and I got these fantastic shots. Kids are so unpredictable sometimes. Sometimes in a negative way, sometimes in a fantastically positive way.

I took so many photos of the children, asked the family if they wanted anymore photos, they happily declined, absolutely content with the shots that I had already gotten. I said goodbye, faced by a sea of smiling faces and waves, and left. To me it felt like an abrupt ending, having expected that they wanted more photos than they actually did.

The birthday balloon went on it’s own journey that day:

Walking back to the car, “I guess I’ll go for a swim so.” Later I saw that I had still taken over 400 photos. It didn’t feel like it at all!

A couple of days later, after editing and sending off the photos, I received back this message, “Hi Jannik, thanks so much for that they are lovely photos and I know the others will be delighted. I love the shots you got of the kids they are lovely. Well done again on getting so many little kids to cooperate!”

Job well done, so! It’s always heart-warming to get such positive feedback. Till next time!

S&R - Wedding at FOTA House by Jan

Third time lucky is what they say, isn’t it? Venues, that is.

This is Steve and Rachel. Just post their wedding ceremony. All the documents have been signed, the rings have settled on each other’s fingers.

The temperature was mid to late 20’s, not that anyone was complaining though! We’d gladly take this sunshine and beautiful weather for a wedding day in exchange for some sweat. It was one of the best days to get married on. Good thing it didn’t go to plan the first couple of times. Not for a lack of trying though!

It was all, unfortunately, due to the pandemic (I won’t dare mention the ‘c-19’ * ahem * everyone is talking about). Three dates and three venues later, and we find ourselves finally for a beautiful wedding at Cork’s FOTA House. This gorgeous venue is not unaccustomed to hosting weddings, and luckily for me, it’s a wedding photographer’s dream! It’s almost as if you don’t even need to try to get a good photo with a building like this.

Pre-Ceremony Preparations

Bride Arriving

The usual pre-ceremony nerves started to cultivate, ramping up as more and more guests trickled in and the clock kept ticking closer to the ceremony starting time. But to the groom’s relief, the bride was not only punctual, but perfectly on time! I’m not sure if his nerves would have handled a delay.

The Bride’s Arrival

“But to the groom’s relief, the bride was not only punctual, but perfectly on time!”

The Flower Girl

Rachel was greeted by her daughter who had the honour of filling the job of being the flower girl. Her excitement was unquestionable! I thought this would be the best way to capture that.

Last minute hair touch-ups made for briefly worried faces. But after a collective group effort, the bride was perfectly ready for her big moment down the aisle with her father.

Wedding Ceremony

With the wedding ceremony taking place in this former entertainment room, with high ceiling and large windows, giving the special occasion a simultaneously intimate, yet airy and spacious feeling.

With the aisle being so short though, I had to be prepared and snap those photos quickly before everyone had already walked past. These are the challenges of a wedding photographer. Best case scenario; you make it look easy!

Sand Pouring Ceremony

It was a gorgeous wedding ceremony, that had all guests laughing at the right times, then crying at others. The sand pouring ceremony is something that has become a tradition in itself, and I personally think it’s a beautiful addition to what we have become to expect from traditional weddings!

All the documents have been signed, the rings have settled on each other’s fingers. The ceremony is over and we move on outside. Time for the meet and greet of all the friends and family members who were able to make it here today.

Importantly, this is the time for me to stay on top of my wedding photographer duties and shoot the family group photos, the couple photos and get the casual shots of everyone enjoying their time.

This wedding was a wonderful depiction of the couple themselves and was a joy to photograph. It was easy going, relaxed and fun. No high expectations, just a thankfulness that they could finally get married and that all the most important people could make it to their wedding.

Where are the wedding couple photos?

Those deserved their very own blog post, so make sure to view the wedding couple photo shoot here!

Testimonial

After I had finished editing the photos and sent them on to the couple, they were kind enough to write me a 5 star review on Google and it was one of the loveliest reviews I have gotten thus far, so I thought I’d share it here:

“We hired Jannik for our wedding ceremony, we were so delighted from start to finish, he is such a lovely guy and could really get a sense of his passion for his craft, he provided us with the most breathtaking photographs of our big day and cannot thank or recommend him enough!”
