Ah Go On - Art Documentation Photographer by Jan

I had the amazing opportunity to photograph this art exhibition at Cork Printmakers.

I will leave it to the artist duo, BAN-EEE-UKT, to explain the full concept behind this work, as they will do a much better job of it than I would. But I will give it a go and summarize that this was an ongoing exhibition that developed further every week with a live art performance. The artwork progressed, showing a little bit more information and organically evolving further. Centred around Irish culture and also the Irish love for tea, do have a read of the official text below, and I will come back to you at the bottom of this page.

Evolving Art Exhibtion

Ah Go On!

Cork Printmakers presents Ah Go On! An exhibition by collaborative duo BAN-EEE-UKT

Ah Go On! is an experimental exhibition that investigates, through artist intervention and performative modes of presentation, the central role that mundane acts and rituals can play within the context of identity and rebellion.

The subject of this investigation is obscured by intentional omission from the offset. Then, over a three week period, the exhibition will evolve; transforming and shifting as work is added, removed and rearranged. A final event will mark the culmination of this process, at which point the full intention of the works will be presented and understood.

BAN-EEE-UKT is a collaborative partnership between artist Lynn-Marie Dennehy and curatorial-practitioner Nic Flanagan. Together their work finds ways of highlighting and disrupting hegemonic systems through interactive performative events, printed media and installation works.

Lynn-Marie Dennehy’s work explores the space between culture, art and resistance. Her goal is to find ways of reflecting the contradictions within our own society through her work, oscillating between the irony of post-modernism and the sincerity of modernism. She does this by building contradictions into the work and exposing the making process. She plays with scale and materiality to create a deliberate friction within the work that allows for different interpretations.

Nic Flanagan’s research-based art and curatorial practices examine progressive programming, theories of interaction and disruption within arts spaces as a means for autonomous and respectful interactions between artists, galleries and communities. Works are designed with a playful, tongue in cheek reproach to Irish culture, both as an internal figure and a disconnected audience member.

Cork Printmakers Studio Gallery is a space for presenting work developed or produced within the studio below, and aims to present contemporary and expanded print practice by members and partners of Cork Printmakers. The gallery celebrates printmaking as an active medium for collaboration, experimentation and exchange.

Ah Go On! is part of a series of exhibitions across 2022 that look at different approaches and interpretations of expanded printmaking and the diverse practices of Cork Printmakers artists who work across disciplines from printmaking, sculpture, video and performance.”

This project was a really fun way to draw on several different skills. As some of you might know, I also do architectural and property photography on the side, so combining these skills while having the freedom to be very creative in terms of lighting, was quite refreshing. I was able to create very harsh lighting conditions for some of these photos, which is something I am not used to in my normal photography style, which is portraits. And generally, I would photograph people in a flattering style, so not having to greatly worry about this was fun!

This is why I love photography. There are so many different areas to branch out into, and doing a project like this every now and then is so interesting. But I also can’t wait on my next portrait shoot again! Haha!

Performance Art Documentation Photography

5-star Google review

Lynn Marie-Dennehy was kind enough to leave me this fantastic review:

As a visual artist I have worked with Save the Journey Photography several times, most recently to document an exhibition of artworks including installation and performance works. This type of documentation is incredibly important as an artist, with images used for publications, websites and for grant applications.

It is often the only record of an artwork that exists if the artwork is temporary or performative. The care and consideration that went into every photograph taken by Save The Journey was mind blowing and showed a level of professionalism and respect for the job that would lead me to use this service for every exhibition going forward.

Jannik was a pleasure to work with and was very patient and understanding of all my ideas and delivered photographs that capture exactly the feeling I wanted for my work. I would recommend Save The Journey for any event!”

Karen's Surprise Birthday Party - Event Photography Cork by Jan

Surpriiise! And let me show you, what a surprise this birthday party was. I’d say, everyone involved did a fantastic job for Karen to not suspect a thing!

Karen Underwood is a famous jazz singer, originally from Chicago, now living in Cork city. Her daughter Christiana, also a well known singer, decided to throw this big surprise party for her mom’s 60th birthday. Sending her to the lovely Cork Opera House under the ruse that she was going to be interviewed about her singing, there were over 100 loved ones waiting for her in anticipating silence. Ready to shout ‘surprise’ at any moment!

The Cork Opera House was such a fitting venue as well, with so many of the guests being musicians and artists, the birthday party also included a full concert with songs written and performed specifically for Karen. She was enjoying the show from her very own birthday throne!

This birthday party was such a joyous celebration and such a fun event to capture as a photographer. People cried, laughed, danced and sang. Everyone enjoyed their drinks, and White Rabbit even catered the evening, which was a lovely surprise for me!

5 star Google review from Christiana

There was so much to capture that evening, and I made sure not to miss any of those special moments. Christiana, who organized the whole event, wrote me this lovely review:

“Omg! Jannik is amazing. He really understands capturing the moment but not being in invasive. He matched the colouring of the photos to my theme without me even mentioning it. My friends and family all look so beautiful and vibrant, I've been able to relive, laughing till I cry, my Mom's birthday all over again. You won't be disappointed! THANK YOU!”

My Favourite Wedding Photography Moments, Part 1 by Jan

I always pinch myself on wedding days. I can’t believe I get to be a photographer and work with so many great wedding couples, like all the ones I’ve met over the years! It’s a dream come true for me.

I’ve started this series of wedding photography blog posts, an opportunity to hone in on specific moments that sometimes get lost in the other wedding blog posts about each individual wedding with the photos of the whole day.

This series is not particular order but with today’s blog post, I’m starting out strong. I absolutely love photographing the couple shoots on the wedding day! And Cork’s nature is great for it!

Nature Couple Shoots

I grew up loving nature. I spent a lot of time in the water, in the forests, hiking and climbing, exploring and having adventures. I think my upbringing really reflects in my photography. Photographing outdoors with these amazing backdrops that we are spoiled with in Ireland, make the photos so much more special. From mountains to the coast and beaches, there are so many beautiful spots in Cork for some wedding couple photography.

A nice side effect of doing the couple shoot is that it gives the couple a moment to have a breather from the rest of the wedding day. It’s in those moments that it’s beautiful to capture those intimate couple photos.

Nature Is Great but Indoors Is Cool Too

This wedding took place at the FOTA House, just outside Cork city. The couple in this case requested something different. So an indoor couple shoot it was!

My Approach – Couple Shoot Locations

When I do the couple photo shoots, I plan the locations thoroughly. I research and visit the spots beforehand, so that nothing is left to chance.

As a wedding photographer I’m looking for:

• a great location that’s easy to get to

• preferably good weather or alternatively somewhere sheltered

• the height of the sun and the sun direction

• always have a back up plan!

Besides keeping an eye on the weather report, not just temperature but wind and wind direction as well, I even research the direction and height of the sun. It’s vital information to take that into account in conjunction with the day’s programme to find the perfect time frame and spot to do the couple shoot! The light is so important!

It’s also important to be realistic with the location. A small break away from the wedding party is great, but we also don’t want to leave everyone waiting for hours, or take away from your special day and have you, the couple, missing out on fun moments.

I always do my best to find a nearby spot which is both beautiful and not difficult to get to. Especially with the bride’s dress and shoes! Talking about shoes, depending on the dress, I like to advice the bride to wear more comfortable shoes for the more adventurous couple shoots. They can then slip back into the proper wedding shoes for the party again.

Each Wedding is Unique

The great thing about weddings is that each one is unique and each wedding couple is unique. Coming from different families, different experiences and expectations, each couple has different wants and needs when it comes to their wedding. I take this very seriously as wedding photographer, and make sure to highlight the important parts and minimize or even skip the less important parts. And it’s the same when it comes to the couple shoot. Some couples might just want to be gone for a few minutes, then head back to the wedding party to not miss out on the fun, while other couples might look for a longer couples shoot at several different locations. It’s that customization of my wedding photography that I always like to emphasize to couples.

But whatever the shoot is, if it’s at an exotic location or in the hotel gardens, it’s got to look great, and I always like to think, “How would this look framed on their wall?” It has to be like a fantastic album cover, it should be striking.

Keep a look out for my next ‘Part 2’ post to find out my next favourite moment of the wedding day. Not that they are in any particular order.
